Emergency Medical Services Highlights

1985 – BBFRD became the first fire department in Palm Beach County to require a Florida EMT certification during the probationary period for continued employment.

1992 – BBFRD became the first fire department in the state to obtain Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) certifications for all EMT’s and Paramedics in the department.

1993 – Initiated Advanced Life Support (ALS) aspect of EMS transport for Boynton Beach residents.

1993 – BBFRD became the first fire department in Palm Beach County with over 40,000 citizens to offer 12-Lead EKG monitoring in the pre-hospital setting.

1997 – BBFRD became the first fire department in Palm Beach County to offer complete Advanced Life Support (ALS) services on all Fire Engines.

2001 – BBFRD introduced Rapid Sequence Intubation (RSI) in the field.

2002 – BBFRD began transporting patients designated as “Cardiac Alerts” to the closest Interventional Cardiac Catheterization facility.

2004 – BBFRD introduced its new EMS Protocol Book. The protocol was provided to all employees on Compact Disc (CD). BBFRD was one of the first fire departments in the country to do so.

2005 – BBFRD began transporting patients designated as “Stroke Alerts” to the closest appropriate facility (Stroke Center).

2005 – BBFRD now has approximately 90% of it’s operational personnel certified as Florida Paramedics. Our goal, 100%!
